Alcatraz is an old prison, which was utilized as a federal penitentiary from 1934 to 1963, a total of 29 years. It’s found in the center of San Francisco Bay in California and if it was opened to the general public from 1972, it has grown into a very famous tourist and historic website. The National Park Service, as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, today maintains the abandoned prison.

Initially, Alcatraz was another Federal association but the prison began gaining popularity after it began home infamous criminals like George””Machine Gun”” Kelly, Robert Franklin Stroud, Alvin Karpis, Henry Young and Al Capone. Criminals who weren’t able to be controlled by other Federal associations were incarcerated here.

The average number of inmates in Alcazar was around 260 and approximately 1545 total men imprisoned here during the 29 years of its operation. There were escape efforts but there’s not any official record if any of these were successful. A couple of prisoners disappeared but were presumed drowned in the San Francisco Bay waters.

After the prison was shut down in 1963, some Native Indians from 1969 to 1971 occupied it. Alcatraz has become a National Historic Landmark, opened to tours.
